“Good heavens, just listening to two human beings, being so fully human, is so mysteriously healing. Thanks to both of you for your authenticity.”
Just last week, I wrote that comment in Substack Notes, in response to Elizabeth Gilbert’s interview with Jane Ratcliffe. It was only after the words were out of my fingertips I realized that is also what is so profoundly beautiful about our monthly Human Hour calls. Have you ever spoken candidly about the human experience in a safe space with a bunch of other souls who are interested only in greater authenticity? It’s a balm more effective than anything that science can produce, and it’s why I walk away from every one of our community calls with a peace that surpasses all understanding.
That is also why I’ve proactively prioritized our Human Hour calls in 2024. “What are those circles on our family calendar?” my son asked. “Are they on the third Friday of every month?” I responded. “Yep,” he confirmed. “Those are my Human Hour calls,” I said.
We’re welcoming a bunch of new community members in the last month, so for those of you new to the Human Hour, it’s a monthly conversation on Zoom about topics fundamental to becoming more fully and more beautifully human, with those topics sourced from the participants themselves on our Substack Chat. It’s a benefit of your paid subscription, and it’s a good one.
This year, the calls will be on the third Friday of every month at 1pm CT, beginning January 19. Here are the topics you’ve nominated for discussion this month:
How to traverse the chasm from a bread-winning job to doing what really interests you. Kelly, how have you done that over time? What wisdom does the group have to share about their own transitions?
How to know when to say no. When am I no longer doing something from love but from obligation and guilt, and how do I know when obligation is reason enough to do something for someone?
How to open your heart to new or challenging experiences. How can I cultivate a a greater attitude of willingness toward the things I want to do but am afraid of, or toward situations that challenge me which I typically shy away from?
